10/1 Canna the value at Stratford

Canna is a fascinating contennder in the 6.40 at Stratford this evening and looks worth an each-way wager at 10/1.

The gelding had some decent form in maiden hurdles in Ireland back in 2011 when trained by Gordon Elliott, finishing a promising fifth of 11 to Sam Bass on his debut at Cork and following that up with a solid second of 16 to Wrekin Rock at Gowran Park.

The son of High Chaparall was then sent over to compete in the Triumph Hurdle Trial at Cheltenham, where he could never get competitive ands finished a well beaten 6th of 7 to baby Mix after being held-up and getting outpaced two out.

However he quickly bounced back to form in less exacting comopany at Limerick when finishing a highly creditable fourth of 15 to Arnaud.

Altough beaen just over 12 lengths that day he put in an eye-cathing effort, making godd headway from off the pace to coose on the leaders approaching the fifth before keeping on at the one pace in the straight.

The winner is a useful sort who went on to finish fifth of 24 to Un Artiste in the 2012 Fred Winter at the Cheltenham Festival and is now officially rated 137.

That is solid form in the contest of this contest and makes the selection look potentially well-treared off his current mark of 110.

Now in the care of Ali Brewer, Canna was off the track for 542 days after his run behind Arnaud before reappearing on the level for his new handler at Lingfield 10 days ago where he shaped well until lack of fitness told before finishing fifth of 8 to Standpoint.

That run should have blow away the cobwebs, and it’s inetresting that connections are now fitting him with the cheekpieces for the first time now that he reverts back to hurdling.

If they have the desired effect I think he would have a big shout in this if he retains the ability he showed when trained in Ireland, and at the odds on offer he looks a bit of value in a wide open contest.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts each-way Canna (10/1 bet365, Boylesports, Paddy Power – BOG)
