12/1 Etxalar looks magic at Musselburgh

Etxalar has dropped a long way in the weights and makes plenty of each-way appeal at 12/1 in the 2.50 at Musselburgh today after shaping as if on his way back last time out.

Lucinda Russell’s charge was a decent sort at his best, with his last win coming at Carlisle back in 2010 off a mark of 121.

It’s fair to say that he has not been at his best since, but he showed that he still retained plenty of ability back in February when a 1 length third to Lord Villez off a mark of 119 and now gets into this off a career-low of 107.

That means that he is now 14lb below his last winning mark, and gives him a massive chance at the weights if he is able to build on his most promising effort for some time at Haydock last month.

The nine-year-old travelled sweetly on the heels of the leaders and jumped well for the vast majority of 3m 4f contest before picking the running up at the 10th.

He then got headed at the 13th and weakened approaching the last to eventually finish 6th of 15 to Monsieur Cadou.

Although beaten just under 13 lengths he was not given a hard time once it was clear he would not be in the frame, and it was an effort which suggested that he was weighted to go in again.

The drop back to 3m today should suit, and from the foot of the weights with Ewan Whillans taking off another 3lb I think he is capable of a huge run in this.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 3pts each-way Etxalar (12/1 Boylesports, BetVictor – BOG)
