Lucky Sun has dropped a long way in the weights and looks worth a punt at 12/1 to take advantage and notch his first career success in the 3.25 at Kelso today.

The gelding had bits and pieces of form when trained by Brian Eckley, most notable when finishing an 18-length third of 8 to the now 140-rated Whisper at Ffos Las a year ago.

He started life off in handicaps on a mark of 112 on the back of that effort, and it’s fair to say that he subsequently showed little in that sphere.

However his handicap mark fell as a result, and after moving to join the shrewd Philk Kirby year he ran his best race for some time when finishing third of 9 to Push Me at Kelso off a mark of 87.

That was his first run for 153 days, and after being sent off the well-backed 3/1 favourite he led two out until being headed approaching the last and then being unable to find any extra on the run-in.

The seven-year-old was then again well-backed last time out when sent off the 11/2 jt-fav for a 17-runner handicap hurdle at Hexham but could only finish a well-beaten fifth.

The fact that he has been well-backed on both his starts for Kirby suggests that connectiosn believe they could well have a well-handicapped horse on their hands, and having since been dropped another 4lb since his last run he Lucky Sun now gets into this off a career-low of 83.

To me that gives him a big shout at the weights in my book, especially with Adam Nichol in the saddle taking another 5lb off his back, and he looks well worth an each-way wager at the odds on offer.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts each-way Lucky Sun (12/1 bet365, BetVictor, Coral, Hills, Stan James – BOG)
