14/1 Thunder can strike in Northumberland Plate

The big betting race of the day is the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle (3.50), and the progressive Big Thunder makes plenty of each-way appeal at 14/1.

Sir Mark Prescott’s charge improved at a rate of knots throughout last season, winning five times in eight starts.

On each occasion he found plenty at the business end of affairs to score with more in hand than the winning margin indicated, and looks a dour stayer who will relish the step up to 2m judged on his last win at Haydock.

That race was over 1m 6f and Big Thunder raced up with the pace before being produced to challenge three from home.

He was then soon in command and only had to be driven out to beat Deficit by 3/4 of a length off a mark of 93.

The handicapper has put him up 5lb for that success, but he is the type that only just does enough and could well be open to even further improvement this year.

Although he has not been seen for 274 days, his handler is a master at getting horses fit and does well with his staying handicappers.

Prescott also saddled his first winner of the season yesterday, and Big Thunder is unlikely to be found wanting through lack of fitness.

To me he is one of only a handful in the line-up open to further improvement, and with Luke Morris in the saddle a huge run looks on the cards.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts each-way Big Thunder (14/1 BetVictor, Stan James – BOG)
