15/2 about Japan appeals in Arc

Japan is an improvng top class colt who has winning for in the mud, so at 15/2 looks decent value in today’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe ay Longchamp (3.05).

Aidan O’Brien’s Epsom Derby third has won five of his eight starts and was ultra-impressive at Royal Ascot when powering clear to beat Bangkok by 4 1/2 lengths in the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes.

He then took the step back up into Group 1 company in his stride when readily landing the Grand Prix De paris over this course and distance when beating Slalom by a cosy 1/2 a length.

Japan has since posted a career-best performance in the Group 1 Juddmonmte Stakes at York where he got the up close home to gamely beat Cystal Ocean by a head.

He showed a really willing attitude over a 1m 2f trip which was far from ideal and the step back up to 1m 4f is sure to suit.

Given that Cystal Ocean had previously made Enable pull out all the stops when beaten a neck in the King George at Ascot, the form is strong and Japan receives a handy 4lb weight-for-age allowance from John Gosden’s wonder mare who looks increibly short to me at a top pticed 4/6 to create history and win the race for a third time.

Japan is lso rated just 6lb below Enable, so there is little to choose between the pair and he also remains open to more improvement.

He also won his maiden at Listowel on heavy ground, so underfoot condtions should not be an issue.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts each-way Japan (15/2 Betfair, Paddy Power, Willima Hill – BOG)
