16/1 Long John appeals on handicap debut

Long John shaped with plenty of promise last time out and makes plenty of appeal at 16/1 on his handicap debut in the 1.35 at Exeter now upped in trip.

Jackie Du Plessis’s charge showed little when finishing down the field in two bumpers but has shown more promise since going hurdling and ran his best race yet last time out when chasing home Royal Guardsman at Newton Abbot over 2m 1f.

Although no mtach for the easy 15 length winner he stayed on well after a mistake at the second last, and the form has a solid look to it.

The third home Grey Missile has come out and won a handicap at Kempton off 105, while the fourth Massena – who finished 14 3/4 lengths behind the selection – bolted up in a handicap at Winmcaton 7 days ago off 104.

That suggests that Long John is weighted to go close in this off an opening mark of 105, especially now upped to in trip to an exteneded 2m 7f.

The six-year-old is bred to relish a stamina test, and with James Best in the saddle taking another 3lb off his back he looks overpriced from what could be a handy mark.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts each-way Long John (16/1 generally available – use BOG firms)
