20/1 Mak the Wokingham wager

Colonel Mak looks terrific each-way value at 20/1 in the Wokingham at royal Ascot today (4.25).

David Barron’s gelding landed the Ayr Silver Cup in 2010 and beat the classy Mirza by 1 3/4 lengths at Ffos Las last season when giving Rae Guest’s charge 5lb.

He went on to finish a cracking fourth of 26 to Our Jonathan in the Ayr Gold cup, after which his form tailed off.

However he bounced back in no uncertain fashion when beating Advanced in a competitive 22 runner affair at Doncaster two starts ago, and followed up with an excellent close up third of 24 to Maarek at Newmarket last time out.

He was beaten just 1 1/2 lengths that day, and now meets that rival on 5lb better terms.

That gives him every chance of turning the tables, especially as he has a good draw in stall 5 to exploit.

There is plenty of early pace on the far side, and I think that is definitely the place to be when there is cut in the ground.

The selection likes to race up with the pace, and his proven form in big race fields is another plus.

He also handles all types of going and has winning form on soft, and his trainer is in terrific form.

Luke McNiff, who takes an invaluable 5lbs off his back, is also back in the saddle having partnered him to victory at Donny and everything looks in place for a huge run.

I can’t really understand why he is almost double the odds of Maarek, and at 20s he looks a great each-way play.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 3pts each-way Colonel Mak (20/1 bet365, Boylesports – BOG, 1/4 odds 1,2,3,4,5)
