Irish raider Top Brass has form in the book which would give him a big shout in the opener Ayr today (1.20) if bouncing back to his best and looks worth chancing at 28/1.
James Black’s gelding is relatively lightly-raced for an 11-year-old and has clearly had his fair share of problems.
He has been well beaten in two runs at Navan and Tramore after a lengthy spell on the sidelines, but should now be nearing peak fitness and interestingly ran his best race last year when second at this venue in testing conditions.
That run last march came over 2m 5f in a class 4 contest, and after being held up at the rear he kept on well before being unable to find any extra close home to be beaten just 1 1/2 lengths by Shooting Times off a mark of 96.
He was quite well backed that day into 5/1, and that suggests that connections clearly believe he retains enough ability to win a race of this nature when conditions are in his favour.
They are certainly that today, and he is now down in grade to class 5 and on a potentially lenient mark of 90.
Given his recent form backing him obviously comes with risks attached, but at 33/1 it looks a risk worth taking especially as the booking of Conor O’Farrell really catches the eye.
