5/1 Chatelet handicapped to strike

Quinte du Chatelet has slipped down to a potentially dangerous mark and looks worth a wager at 5/1 to take advantage in the 5.00 at Leicester today.

David Pipe’s gelding is a five time winner over hurdles, and although he has yet to win over fences he gets into this of a 10lb lower mark than when registering his last success over the smaller obstacles.

His current mark of 104 also means that he is 21lbs lower than his highest rating, and he had run two decent races over fences prior to flopping last time out.

The first of those came at Fontwell where after racing prominently he was unable to find any extra approaching the last and weakened to finish fourth of 7 to Father Probus off 115.

He then put in a better effort over 3m at Exeter when fourth of 9 to Flying Award (beaten 8 1/2 lengths) off 112 he again raced at the head of affairs and was disputing second approaching the last before being unable to find any extra on the run-in.

The third home in that contest Musical Wedge – to whom Quinte du Chatelet was giving 14lbs –  has since come out and bolted up at Towcester to give the form a boost and the form looks strong in the context of this contest.

The selection was then well beaten last time up at Ludlow, but he was ridden with far more restraint that day and I am prepared to put a line through that effort as those tactics don’t suit.

The handicapper has been quick to drop him another 7lb as a result though, and that makes him looks weighted to take all the beating on the pick of his form.

He also has the services of Tom Bellamy in the saddle taking another 7lb off his back, and if ridden more aggressively from the front I think he is going to take all the beating in this.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 3pts win Quinte du Chatelet (5/1 bet365, Betfred, Hills, BetVictor – BOG)
