Markaz looked a sprinter to keep onside when scoring last time out and is strongly fancied at 7/1 to follow-up in the 4.15 at Goodwood today.

The Barry Hills trained colt shaped with plenty of promise on his first two starts when running very green, and still looked in need of the experience when winning at Ascot last time out.

The son of Dark Angel, who is a brother to the useful sprinter Mecca’s Angel, was slowly away in that 6f contest before making smooth headway three from home and squeezing through to take up the running a furlong home to quicken clear and beat Fingal’s Cave by 1 1/4 lengths.

There was plenty to like about the way he got the job done, and an opening mark of 85 could well be on the lenient side given that he looks from from the finished article and open to stacks more improvement.

The fact that Markaz had little difficulty winning despite a slow start at Ascot suggest he has a big engine, and if he breaks on terms he could potentially make a mockery of his opening mark in the hands of the in-form George Baker.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 3pts win Markaz (7/1 Betfred – BOG)
