9/2 Havana Cooler hot stuff at Haydock

Havana Cooler looks potentially better than a handicapper and rates a solid bet at 9/2 in today’s bet365 Old Newton Cup at Haydock (3.30).

Luca Cumani’s colt had a progressive profile last season, bearing the talented Pether’s Moon by 3/4 of a length at Newmarket off 83 before finishing third behind that rival at Goodwood off 91.

Havana Cooler then ran a stormer to finish a 1 1/2 length third of 11 to Dark Crusader over 1m 6f in the Melrose at York off 93, having every chance until being unable to find any extra inside the last.

To me the 1m 6f trip was just too far for Havana Cooler, and today’s 1m 4f journey looks his optimum.

The son of Hurricane was then off the track for 301 days before reappearing in the Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes at Royal Ascot and running a blinder to finish third of 18 to the ultra-progressive Arab Spring.

Havana Cooler was slowly into stride that day but stayed on strongly from well off the pace to be beaten 3 1/4 lengths off a rating of 97.

He did the best of those that came from behind, and it was a terrific performance given his time off the track.

The four-year-old is sure to come on a bundle for the run, and off just 1lb higher is going to take all the beating in this line-up – especially as he looks the type who has the scope to improve further.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 4pts win Havana Cooler (9/2 bet365, Betfred – BOG)
