On My Own will appreciate the step up back in trip in the 5.30 at Newmarket today and rates a solid bet at 9/2.
The son of Rock Of Gibraltar first caught the eye on his debut at Newbury last year when trained by Marcus Tregoning and finishing fifth of 14 to subsequent Group winner Noble Mission.
He raced keenly in midfield that day before not getting a clear run when making headway two from home and weakening inside the last.
Although beaten just over 10 lengths it was an effort which suggested he had plenty of ability, and the form of the races looks strong as it has thrown up a whole host of subsequent winners.
He was then far from disgraced in a decent maiden at Chester’s May meeting when finishing 6th of 13 to Father Science, and caught the eye again on his comeback run at Kempton when 5th of 11 to String Theory.
That was his first run for John Hills, and his first for 357 days, and after being held-up at the rear he made good late headway to finish a never nearer fifth of 11 to String Theory.
He then duly built on that effort on his handicap debut at Lingfield last time out when an eye-catching fourth of 10 to Sir Mike.
The four-year-old forfeited valuable ground throughout by raced wide that day and after making good headway three from home to chase the leaders got outpaced approaching the last.
However he then stayed on strongly again without being knocked about to be beaten just over 2 lengths without ever quite having the pace to challenge.
That contest was over a mile, and judged on that effort return to today’s 1m 2f trip will be right up his street.
I think he has the potential to improve over middle distances, and there is little doubt in my mind that he has shown enough to win races of his current mark of 72.
Daily Sport recommended bet: 3pts win On My Own (9/2 generally available – use BOG firms)
