Sir Mark Prescott’s runners always command the utmost respect when upped in trip on their handicap debuts, and Alcaeus is strongly fancied at 100/30 to take advantage of what could be a very lenient mark and land the 5.40 at Redcar today.
The colt had juts three starts last season, with his best effort coming when fourth of 9 to Royal Prize in a 7f maiden at Kempton.
He was held-up towards the rear that day before making good late headway under tender handling to be nearest at the finish, and although beaten just over 12 lengths the form of the race is strong.
The winner has gone on to score again since off a mark of 75, the runner-up has landed back-to-back victories this season off ith his last win coming off 75 (now rated 82), and the third hope Keep Calm has also gone to to score twice off ratings of 60 and 64.
That makes the selection look handily weighted off an opening mark of just 57, especially as he is now upped significantly in trip to 1m 2f.
The son of Hernando is a brother to the useful 1 1/2 mile winner Albert Bridge and is bred to come into his own in middle distances.
It would be no surprise to see him take off now going handicapping over further, and his handler has proved time and time again with similar types that he is the master at placing them to the maximum effect.
This looks a glorious opening for Alcaeus and it will be disappointing if he doesn’t take it.
