Another Try worth another chance at 20s to cash-in on falling mark

Another Try was given a poor tactical ride last time out and looks worth another chance at 20/1 to take advantage of his falling handicap mark in the 7.45 at Epsom this evening.

Alan Jarvis’ gelding won two handicaps last season, including over 6f at Haydock where he landed a gamble off a mark of 78.

He was slowly into stride that day but travelled up strongly and after leading inside the final furlong ran on strongly to score by 1 1/2 lengths from Cruise To The Limit.

The eight-year-old then ran well in his next two races off a mark of 83 when fourth of 16 to Amadeus Wolfe Tone at Doncaster and 5th of 16 to Choral at Salisbury and wasn’t discredited on his final start of 2012 when 6th of 10 to Mudiq on the all-weather at Lingfield.

It’s fair to say that he hasn’t been at his best in three starts this season, but he has shaped as if needing the first two runs and was ridden all wrong when fifth to Nasharra on his latest start at Haydock two weeks ago.

His young rider had him racing far too keenly up with the pace that day and after leading a furlong from home he faded out of contention to be beaten 11 lengths.

I was at the track that day and it’s fair to say that his trainer was far from happy with the way he was ridden given that he is best when covered up and being produced late and he clearly expected a much better showing judged by his post race reaction.

The handicapper has since dropped him a further 3lb to a mark of 75, and that means he is now 3lb below his last success.

That gives him every chance from a handicapping perspective and he is now reunited with Michael J Murphy who rode him to his last success and is terrific value for his 5lb claim.
