Basseterre and Fallon a potent combination

Kieren Fallon is reunited with Basseterre in the 4.50 at Newmarket today, and the pair look worth a punt at 4/1 to maintain their 100% record together.

Fallon has ridden the colt just once, partnering him to a comfortable 1 1/2 length success in a handicap at Haydock three starts back off a mark of 77.

Charlie Hills’ charge followed that up with a solid third to Ardmay at Ascot in June off today’s mark of 82, after which he was given a break.

The son of Cape Cross was then well-backed into 5/2 favourite on his return to action at Sandown two weeks ago, but he ran as if in need of the race in finishing 7th of 10 to Gaul Wood.

After being restless in the stalls and slowly away, he made good headway from the rear on the outside two from home before keeping on at the once pace to be beaten 4 3/4 lengths.

However he was not knocked about once it was clear he would not be winning, and with that run under his belt is sure to strip much fitter this afternoon.

To me he definitely has the potential to win more races of his current rating, and this race should be run to suit his come from behind tactics with Crown Counsel likely to set a strong pace at the head of affairs.

Judged on his win at Haydock there is little doubt that Fallon is the right man for him, and this looks a nice opportunity for him to get back on the winning trail.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 3pts win Basseterre (4/1 generally available – use BOG firms)
