Brook feeling emotional for home defence

KELL BROOK TRAINING29Sheffield IBF welterweight champion makes his first defence of the title he took from Shawn Porter last year this Saturday [March 28] in his home city and told DAILY SPORT Boxing how he feared he’d never walk again after being attacked in Spain just after winning the title.

Brook who takes on Romanian Jo Jo Dan at Sheffield’s Motorpoint Arena will be looking to impress his home fans with a 5 star performance which is to be televised by Sky Sports in the UK and Showtime in the US.

Winning the title was an unbelievable buzz and for two weeks I was flying but after the attack, I was down in the gutter,” said Brook. “I was feeling sorry for myself just lying there in bed, but now I am back and better than ever.

“I’ve come a long way from the injury, not knowing where I would be with the leg. I’ve put it under severe stress in a full camp and I have had no problems with it. It was hard at the beginning but we took baby steps and slowly but surely we got up to full speed and tonight couldn’t come quick enough to defend the title in my hometown – it’s going to be so emotional.

“The leg is fine, I do everything that I used to do, there’s no pain and it’s not holding me back at all.”

And Kell has been tipped to shine by former world welter weight champion Ricky ‘The Hitman’ Hatton who told DAILY SPORT Boxing “I was very impressed with the way Kell won his World title,I know as well as anyone how hard it is to go to America and beat one of their champions and, although it was quite a close fight, Kell was exceptional.

“He’s had a few problems out of the ring in the past couple of months, but that’s just made him hungrier for success and it seems like everyone in Sheffield is getting behind him now.

“A lot of people might not know much about his opponent, but you don’t get to be a mandatory challenger without being a World class fighter and he’ll give his all. That said, I think Kell will shine and then move on to those big fights he’s chasing for later in the year.”
