Browne becomes 1st Aussie heavyweight champ of the world

Big hitting Aussie heavyweight Lucas Browne made history on Saturday [March 5] when his got off the canvas to stop Ruslan Chagaev to capture the WBA world heavyweight crown.

36yo Browne travelled to Grozny as the outsider but after a 6th round knockdown got up to stop the seasoned Uzbek in the 10th.

“I’m so proud to have won this title for Australia. Obviously I can improve but I showed that my heart and power can never be questioned,” Browne told DAILY SPORT Boxing.

“I’m thrilled to have made history. It was a big step up, but I got the win and I thank everyone for the support. Words can’t describe how I feel right now.”

Browne is now in the big time with massive fights on the horizon such as a unification with recently crown heavyweight king Tyson Fury which would be a big draw.
