Cardinal Walter worth a wager at Newcastle

Cardinal Walter shaped really well on his belated return to the level and looks worth siding with at 11/1 in the 3.40 at Newcastle today.

The gelding had some smart form on the level back in 2012 when trained by David Simcock, winning once and posting several solid efforts to make the frame in competitive handicaps.

They included a cracking third of 16 to Guarantee in the valuable 1m 6f Melrose Handicap at York off a mark of 86.

Cardinal Walter then suffered an injury and had just one run in 2013, after which he joined trainer Nicky Henderson for a career over hurdles.

The seven-year-old has since developed into a useful performer over the obstacles, winning twice to be rated 142 at his peak.

Cardinal Walter is able to race in this off waht looks a workable mark of 91, and ran better than the bare result suggests last time out at York when fourth of 15 to Saigon City.

He was steadied at the start by Jamie Spencer and held-up miles off the pace before staying on well to be nearest at the finish and beaten just two lengths.

It was a cracking effort given the enormous amount of ground he was asked to make up, and he now meets the runner-up The Cashel Man on 8lb better terms.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts each-way Cardinal Walter (11/1 BetVictor, Stan James – BOG)
