Carrickboy an Aintree ace

Carrickboy shaped with plenty of promise on his seasonal reappearance and is strongly fancied at 5/1 to land the finale at Aintree today (3.20).

Venetia Williams’ gelding looked, and ran, as if in need of the run when finishing fourth of 9 to The Rainbow Hunter at Haydock last month on his first start for 223 days.

He travelled well for much of the 3m contest before weakening three from home as lack of fitness took it’s toll and was not knocked about once it was clear he would not be winning.

The handicapper has since dropped him 2lb to a mark of 131, and that should enable him to be competitive in this now that he has a run under his belt.

The eight-year-old showed progressive form over fences, winning at Catterick before going on to land a handicap chase at Hereford in facile style off a rating of 128.

He was then far from disgraced in finishing 6th of 20 to Hunt Ball at the Cheltenham Festival where he stayed on under pressure to be beaten just under 14 lengths off a mark of 133.

A repeat of that effort would give him major claims in this off 2lb lower, and he looks the type who has plenty more to offer this season.

He also has winning form in soft ground, and he looks sure to take the beating off his featherweight of 10st.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 3pts win Carrickboy (5/1 generally available – use BOG firms)
