Carroll’s Time Square ready to call the tune

Time Square shaped with a bit more encouragement last time out and looks worth another chnace at 8/1 to cash-in on his lenient handicap mark in the 7.40 at Kempton today.

The gelding won three times at the track last year, with one of those successes coming over this evening’s 1m 3f trip.

In the last of those he made all and after being ridden clear two from home on strongly to win unchallenged by 2 lengths from Minstrel Lad off a mark of 58.

Tony Carroll’s charge was put up 5lb to a mark of 63 for that effort, but is now back down to 55.

That gives him every chance at the weights, and before disappointing slightly on his penultimate start he had shaped well in his previous two outings.

In the first of those he raced keenly before keeping on to finish 5th of 11 to Outlaw Torn over 1m 1f at Wolverhampton without being unduly knocked about, and he then put in a similar effort over 1m 4f at this venue when fifth of 8 to the “plot horse” Low Key.

The seven-year-old was well-backed for a 1m 2f contest here on on the back of those runs, but after tracking the leaders faded a furlong from home to finish 7th of 12 to Handsome Stranger.

He then ran better  than his finishing position suggests last time out over course and distance when ridden by Charles Bishop, where he raced far too keenly at the head of affairs until being headed two from home and weakening to finish a 7 1/4 length sixth of 11 to Thane Of Cawdor.

The winner has come out again and won since, and with the handicapper having dropped the selection another couple of pounds he is now 3lb lower than when last successful.

Another plus is that he is reunited with Joey Haynes who rode him to two of his successes last year and takes another 5lb off his back.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 3pts win Time Square (8/1 bet365, Betfred – BOG)
