Cathy value to topple Turner in Lady Jockey’s Championship

Irish bookies Paddy Power have made Hayley Turner their red-hot hot 1/3 favourite to land the inaugural Lady Jockeys’ Championship.

Hayley rode 88 winners in 2011 compared to her main challenger Cathy Gannon’s 71, but Cathy had her season cut short when she broke her leg in October and is due to return to action today.

She was enjoying her best season to date before she broke her femur after being unseated by Forever Janey at Nottingham.

Paddy Power said: “Hayley sets the standard among female jockeys having won two Group 1 winners last year and she’ll be mighty difficult to beat. But there is some outstanding female talent coming through the ranks including Cathy Gannon and Julie Burke and I’m sure they’ll make her fight all the way to the finish.”

Altough Hayley is a worthy favourite the value surely has to be Cathy, who will be hungry for winners following her spell on the sidelines.

She is widely regarded as a real assett by many trainers due to her strength and tenacity in the saddle and had a lot more rides than Hayley last year.

If she gets the same support this time round – which looks virtually guranteed – then there is every chance she could make history and land the title from her arch rival.

2012 Lady Flat Jockeys’ Championship – Paddy Power bet:

Paddy Power: 1/3 Hayley Turner, 5/2 Cathy Gannon, 20/1 Julie Burke, 33/1 Amy Ryan, 100/1 Lucy Barry, Leonna Mayor
