In the 1m Balmoral Handicap at Ascot today (4.40), the David Barron trained Clon Coulis looks to have lots going for him.

This five-year-old mare has won once and finished runner-up once in two starts over course and distance.

The placed effort came in the Royal Hunt back in June where she finished a nose scoend of 28 to Afaak off a mark of 99 and was arguably an unlucky loser.

After being held-up well off the pace under regular pilot Jamie Spencer, Clon Coulis was denied a clear run when making his move two from home.

When she eventually did see dayloght, he powered home to go down by the narrowest of margins and would have won in another stride.

It was a terrific effort given how the race panned out and Clon Coulis backed it up with a decent fifth next time out in a Listed contest at Pontefract off a revisec rating of 103.

She also caught the eye two starts back when get in no luck in-running and finishing a never nearer 3 1/4 length eighth of 19 to Excellent Times off 102 and now drops back in grade having contsted a Listed contest last time out at Newmarket.

Having also been eased a further 2lb in the weights, Clon Coulis is now able to race off 99 again.

That is the same as her fine run in the Royal Hunt Cup and 2lb lower than when last successful at Chelsmford back in March and gives her leading claims from a handicapping perspective on ground which holds no fears.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts each-way Clon Coulis (7/1 Paddy Power, Sky Bet – BOG, paying 6 places)
