Coral boxer tips himself for glory at Brentwood

Bookie-turned-boxer Frankie Monkhouse is tipping himself to be a winner on Saturday night, after making himself odds-on to win his own fight.

The undefeated Light Middleweight works for bookmakers Coral at their London HQ, but is going part-time with the betting firm to concentrate on his boxing career.

Monkhouse, aged 28, faces Vasil Vasilev in Brentwood, Essex, on Saturday night, and has ratcheted up the pressure by making himself a 1/4 favourite to beat the Bulgarian.

Monkhouse said: “Having made myself odds-on, there’s a lot of pressure for me to live up to the short odds, but I’m confident I can deliver a third straight win.

“I know there’s going to be a lot of Coral punters getting behind me, so I hope I can get a win for them and do it in good style”.

Monkhouse was a promising amateur boxer, but turned professional after taking a break from the sport following an injury to his nose.

“I became tired of sitting in the office betting on other fights and thought I should take a punt on my own career and use my talent. It’s really taken off” he said.

Coral make Monkhouse 5/1 to win inside the distance on Saturday night and 2/5 to claim a victory on points. Vasil Vasilev is the 7/2 outsider.

Paul Garbett from Coral said: “We’re really proud to be supporting Frank and fancy him to do the business on Saturday night. The smart money is on a victory for the Mad Monk and Coral punters across the country will be celebrating alongside him if he records a third-straight win”.
