Teenage sensation Hughie Fury plans to step up his bid to rub Mike Tyson out of the record books with a match against Brit basher Tony Thompson.
Fury made it eight wins out of eight with a shut-out points win over Moses Matovu in Milton Keynes and will be back in action on Saturday, September 14.
Two weeks later he’s set to box on the undercard when cousin Tyson Fury battles David Haye at the MEN Arena – and the 18 year-old hopes to be facing Thompson.
Thompson has twice stopped David Price and beating the American would keep Fury on course to become the youngest-ever world heavyweight champion.
To replace Tyson in the record books Fury would have to win a version of the championship around December, 2014
“We’re trying to get big fights now,” said Fury.
“I have the speed and power to beat Thompson, but if he won’t take the fight we will look for someone else with a good rating.
“I’m only 18 years old, so there’s no rush, but I feel as though I’m ready.
“I’m sparring world-class heavyweights and holding my own and the better the opponent, the better I will perform.
“I’ve got a few rounds under my belt and I’m ready to step up now. I should be ready to go for the world title when I’m 20 years old.”
Fury’s latest win was a one-sided thrashing of Matovu at WonderWorld Xscape nightclub.
Ten weeks earlier, Fury had outpointed him over six rounds – and won every session of their rematch over four.
Fury dominated from first bell to last and Matovu did well to survive a two-fisted attack in the last round that had him badly dazed.
“I thought I was going to stop him,” said Fury. “Every shot I caught him with hurt him. But he knows how to grab hold and survive. I just took my time and picked my shots.”
