Colonel Mak has slipped to a dangerous mark and makes plenty of each-way appeal at 12/1 in the 3.15 at Doncaster today.
The gelding disappointed last time out at York when finishing just 11th fo 14 to Regal Parade, but prior to that effort had run consistently well all season and notched two wins.
His last win coming five starts back in a conditions event at Hamilton where he battled on bravely in the mud to beat Victoire De Lyphar by 3/4 of a length off an official rating of 102.
He followed that up with a solid 5th of 20 to Van Ellis at York and was then far from disgraced in the Great St Wilfred at Ripon before putting in a terrific effort in the Ayr Gold Cup when keeping on well inside the final furlong to finish 5th of 26 to Captain Ramius off a mark of 99.
David Barron’s charge now gets into this off just 98, and that gives him every chance at the weights if able to bounce back from his latest effort.
He is just the type to do just that, and significantly his best effort this season came over course and distance when he won a competitive 22 runner affair off today’s mark.
A repeat of that effort would give him major claims in this, and Luke McNiff – who partnered him to victory that day – is back in the saddle and takes an invaluable 5lb off his back.
The son of Makbul also has underfoot conditions to suit, and everything looks in place for a bold showing.
Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts each-way Colonel Mak (12/1 Betfred – BOG)
