Greyhound racing is a relatively niche sport in the UK, although in the mid-1900s, it was second to football in terms of being the most-spectated sports in the country. There were huge races held on a regular basis at over 200 venues around the United Kingdom and some phenomenal greyhounds putting on high-quality racing shows for fans of the sport. However, in the years that followed, the sport has been in decline overall, which has resulted in numerous venues being closed up and down the country.

Sadly, there are now just 19 licensed tracks spread across both England and Scotland, although they are attracting punters in their numbers still. The diehard, fanatical followers of greyhound racing will always be there, particularly as enjoying a night at the races is a rare experience that can’t be had in every destination around the UK. From people who want to enjoy a night out with family and friends to loyal followers of the sport who follow the likes of Matt Newman’s betting tips and strategy on greyhound racing, there is still a core following which are helping to make the sport what it is today. The modern-day venues play their part in creating what is an attractive product in 2021, too. With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the top greyhound tracks in the UK right now.

Romford

Following the death of Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium, Romford is now one of the main greyhound tracks in London, located just east of the capital in the London Borough of Havering, Romford. Crayford is another popular destination for fans of the sport to frequent, but Romford is particularly well known for its excellent food and catering facilities on offer, alongside its bars. Away from the available hospitality, Romford is also home to big occasions such as the Essex Vase, Champion Stakes, Coronation Cup, and the Golden Sprint. Thanks to £10 million worth of renovation works that took place in 2019, Romford is an excellent venue to soak up some greyhound racing action.

Towcester

Located in the glorious Northamptonshire countryside, Towcester is a relatively new greyhound racing venue compared to many others in the country right now. Established in 2014 after the venue was originally used for horse racing, the greyhound track helped propel Towcester up the greyhound venue rankings, eventually becoming the home of the English Greyhound Derby in 2017 and 2018. With the track now under new ownership, who have some seemingly ambitious plans in place for the venue, Towcester is only going to become a more attractive proposition for greyhound fans.

Nottingham

Nottingham is a city in the UK that has a strong affinity with greyhound racing, especially when you factor in the old White City Stadium – a much-loved venue. Located just outside the heart of the city, Nottingham is a good venue to take in some racing, with several bars and an all-round great atmosphere on offer there.

Crayford

Competing with Romford for many of London’s punters, Crayford is in Bexley and is steeped in history after hosting thousands of races since 1937. After gaining a solid reputation in the sport and hosting some truly iconic occasions in the sporting calendar, Crayford now takes in large numbers for other notable events such as the Golden Jack, Gold Collar and the Kent St Leger. Boasting excellent hospitality services, including a 230-seater restaurant that overlooks the track, Crayford is a fantastic venue to visit.

Sheffield Stadium

Built in 1929, Sheffield Stadium has been hosting prestigious races on the racing calendar for decades. Also known as the Owlerton Stadium, the recent £5.5 million upgrade has elevated the venue to a whole new level, enabling it to host a range of events and showcase the sport of greyhound racing in the best way possible. Located just outside the city centre, there’s an extensive selection of tasty food to eat and refreshing drinks to sample in one of the many venues in the stadium, although its 300-seater Panorama Restaurant is arguably the best of the lot.
