After his heroic defeat at the hands of rising star Adrien Broner at the weekend Gavin Rees promoter Eddie Hearn is planning a second world title shot for the Welsh lightweight before the end of 2013.
“Gavin’s performance won him many admirers in America,” Hearn told DAILY SPORT. “He is a true warrior and we have already been approached about further fights for Gavin in the US in early summer.
“His stock however has also been raised significantly in the UK and there are still some big domestic opportunities available to him here. All in all the future is very bright for Gavin and the plan is too pick up another World title shot before the end of 2013.”
Rees fought courageously on Saturday night against a guy tipped to take over the Mayweather mantle of the best pound for pound fighter in the world in due course. As we went to press leading bookie Ladbrokes were offering odds on Broner’s world domination as follows Adrien Broner to be a 5 weight world champion 7/1 and Adrien Broner to be a 6 weight world champion 20/1, with Ladbrokes spokesman Alex Donohue telling DAILY SPORT “As is often the case we were happy to cheer on the favourite following a spirited gamble on the British underdog. Superstardom now looks well within Broner’s reach and the odds suggest he’ll be a world champion at five weights at least.”
