Hoofalong is strongly fancied at 5/1 to take advantage of a career-low mark and land the spoils in the 7.15 at Wetherby this evening.

Mick Easterby’s gelding was in good form in 2013 when landing back to back handicaps at Doncaster and Windsor.

The first of those came over 7f off amark of 72, and the second off 77 in a 5f contest at Windsor.

Hooflaong went on to finish a fine second of 13 in a class 2 contest over 5f at York off 84, and is now able to race off just 71 after drawing a blank last year.

That gives the five-year-old outstanding claims at the weights and he hinted that his time was near last time out at York when a 3 1/4 length fifth of 18 to Harwoods Volante.

Hooflalong shoed plenty of pace to chase the leaders before taking up the running at halfway and weakening late on after being headed at the furlong marker.

That was his third run of the season and he should now be spot on to do himself justice

This race is less competitive, and with Nathan Evans in the saddle taking another 7lb off Hoofalong’s back this looks a great opportunity for him to get back on the winning trail.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 3pts win Hoofalong (5/1 Paddy Power – BOG)
