Icon can make Goldie’s Dream come true

The Northumberland Plate (3.20 Newcastle) is the big betting race of the day, and Jim Goldie’s Icon Dream appeals as a lively outsider at 25/1.

The gelding has never been the most straightforward, but he was a useful sort in his three-year-old days when runner-up in the Chester Vase and a good fourth behind Jan Vermeer in a group 3 contest at the Curragh.

The five-year-old has not gone on as expected, but ran really well in last year’s Chester Cup when keeping on well after a slow start to finish 7th of 17 to Overturn (beaten just over 5 lengths) and finished a solid seventh of 19 to Tominator in this 12 months ago.

Although beaten just over 9 lengths, he blew all his chance with a slow start from an unfavoured high draw and in the circumstances ran a highly creditable race.

The son of Sadler’s Wells has bagged a much better draw today in stall 8, and it looks as if his Scottish handler has laid him out for this.

Although he has not run for a long time, he has run respectably after a lay-off in the past and he proved he handled testing conditions when winning on heavy at Tipperary on his debut as a juvenile.

Graham Lee, who has done terrifically well since switching codes, looks the type of rider who could well cajole him into putting his best foot forward and if he does I can see him running a big race at huge odds.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts each-way Icon Dream (25/1 bet365 – BOG)
