Imperial a mint bet at 28/1

The big betting race of the day is the Blue Square Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood (3.55), and the well-handicapped Imperial Guest looks cracking value at 28/1.

George Margarson’s gelding was not at his best in his first two starts this season, but both those runs have come over 7f and he showed last time out when dropped back down to today’s 6f trip at Ascot that he was approaching his peak and ready to strike.

The gelding got no luck in running whatsoever at the Berkshire track and was beaten just 3/4 into third behind Shropshire Lass.

He travelled ominously well throughout but had nowhere to go two from home, with his rider seemingly unwilling to force him through a gap.

In the end he waited until the gap widened inside the last, and Imperial Guest then stayed on strongly without ever quite threatening to get up.

There is no doubt in my mind that he should have won that race, and he gets into this off the same mark of 94 which is 1lb lower than when he last last successful.

That success came at Ascot last May where he again travelled strongly and showed a good turn of foot before gamely holding off the classy Deacon Blues.

It was an excellent effort in receipt of just 4lb from the runner-up who went on to prove himself one of the top sprinters in the country with multiple Group successes.

That form is rock solid in the context of this contest, and he will definitely get the strong pace he needs to be seen at his best in this.

Providing he takes to the track, and I can’t see any reason why he won’t, he should get a lovely tow into the race which could well be set up for a closer like him.

To me he has a touch of class and there is no way he should be 28s for this. I had him in at no bigger than 20s, so at the odds on offer he looks a great each-way play with BetVictor who are paying 1/4 odds the first five home.

Coral do go a standout 33/1, but they are only paying out on the first four places.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 3pts each-way Imperial Guest (28/1 BetVictor – BOG, 1/4 odds 1,2,3,4,5)
