Irish raider Headlines can Hit the bookies for six

Irish raider Hit The Headlines could well be on a handy mark on his handicap debut in the 1.05 at Cheltenham today and looks well worth a wager at the 6/1 on offer.

The gelding won a bumper and a novice hurdle and has made the frame in 5 starts over fences since joining Gordon Elliott without being knocked about.

He ran particularly well on his penultimate outing when chasing home The Shepherd King over 2m at Navan where he chased the leaders before getting outpaced two from home and then kept on again to be beaten 6 lengths off an official rating of 122.

The seven-year-old was then very tenderly handled when finishing fourth of 11 to the highly regarded Ballycasey in a decent beginners’ chase over 2m 1f at Navan last time out.

He was never really put into the race at any stage that day, tracking the leaders in a moderate fourth throughout and then keeping on at the once pace to be beaten 27 lengths.

However it was an effort which suggested that connections where bringing him along with handicaps in minds, and he now gets into this off what looks a very workable 119.

It’s also interesting that he is now being stepped back up to 2m 5f as that is the same trip which saw him registred his last success over hurdles and his last four runs have suggested that he has been crying out for it.

Another plus is that he has the services of Keith Donoghue in the saddle who takes another 3lb off his back and is a decent man to have on side in conditional jockeys’ contest like this.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 3pts each-way Hit The Headlines (6/1 BetVicror, Coral, Stan James – BOG, 1/4 odds 1,2,3,4)
