Kodicil a 16/1 Newcastle nugget

Kodicil was a massive eye-catcher last time out and is of serious interest at 16/1 in the 7.20 at Newcastle this evening.

Tim Walford’s charge ran far better than his final finishing position of 7th of 14 to Gold Show at Ponetfract suggests on his first start for 209 days.

He travelled really strongly on the heels of the leading pair but his jockey didn’t ask him to pick up and grab a gap to give him a chance as the pace quickened two from home.

That resulted in him getting buffeted about, and after quickly finding himself behind a wall of horses with nowhere to go he was allowed to come home in his own time under a hands and heels ride to be beaten 8 lengths.

It was a very tender ride, and one that suggested he was capable of much better and capable of winning races of his current mark.

Indeed, the handicapper has since dropped him 2lb to a mark of 59, and that means that he is now 3lb lower than when registering his last success.

The gelding showed improved form to win handicaps at Beverley and Pontefract in 2011, with his last success coming off a mark of 62 where he ran on strongly to beat amazing Blue Sky by a length.

It’s fair to say that he was not seen at his best in just three outings last year, but he didn’t shape too badly on his final start when fourth of 10 to Madrasa at Redcar over 1m 6f.

He raced up with the pace that day until his stamina gave way two from home, and although he has yet to win over today’s trip of 1m 4f it should be fine judged on that effort.

The rare booking of Paddy Aspell, who has a 50% strike rate when teaming up with the yard (2 wins from just 4 rides since 2000) also catches the eye, and at the odds on offer he looks overpriced and cracking each-way value.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 3pts each-way Kodicil (16/1 bet365, Betfred, Hills – BOG)
