Millkwood is well-treated on the pick of his form in the 4.50 at Newcastle today and looks decent value at 6/1 to open finally open his account now dopped back to the minimum trip.
John Davies’ gelding is yet to get his head in front in 8 starts but has two runs to his name which suggest he should be capable of winning this off his current mark of 68.
He shaped with promise in a couple of maidens as a juvenile before putting in a really solid effort on his handicap debut when runner-up to March in a 5f nursery at Nottingahm on good-to-soft ground.
The son of Millkom kept on really well that day to be beaten 1 3/4 lengths and the winner has gone on to develop into a useful sprinter this season and is now officially rated 100.
The selection was then dropped back into maiden company for his seasonal reappearance over 6f at York and after tracking the leaders was unable to find any extra approaching the last before finishing a highly creditable 4 1/2 length fourth of 8 to Pearl Bridge.
The runner-up Nurpur has gone on to score three times since and the third horse Kyllachy Star also scored next time up to give the form a solid look in the context of this contest.
Millkwood then showed decent speed before weakening badly approaching the last to finish a well beaten 8th of 12 at Thirsk ovcer 6f before catching the eye last time out – again over 6f – when keeping on from well off the pace to finish 5th of 10 to Rocksilla at Pontefract without being knocked about.
All his runs this season have suggested that a drop back to 5f will suit, and he now gets that today.
This also looks a very weak class 5 contest, and with the ground ideal its looks a golden opportunity for him to notch his first success.
Daily Sport recommended bet: 3pts win Millkwood (6/1 Paddy Power – BOG)
