Newton Lad revels in the mud and looks worth a punt in the 2.30 at Newcastle today now reunited with Tom Scudamore.

Lucinda Russell’s eight year-old progressed well over fences last season when winning twice.

In the last of those at Ayr on heavy ground he raced prominently before pulling clear from six out to win easily by 19 lengths off a mark of 118 in the hands of Scudamore.

He got put up to 125 for that success and was running a decent race off it when falling four from home at Uttoxeter in a contest won by American.

Newtown Lad is now able to race off 123 having shaped better than the bare result on seasonal debut at Bangor off 2lb higher when pulled-up after racing far too freely in the early stages and weakening four from home.

That spin should have taken the fizz out of him and with Scudamore, who is 1-1 on him, back in the plate and underfoot condotions holding no fears it would be no surprise to leave that run well behind and prove hard to catch in this.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 3pts win Newton Lad (7/2 generally available – use BOG firms)
