Nocturn can strike on handicap debut

The unexposed Nocturn make his eagerly awaited handicap debut in the 3.25 at Ascot and rates a solid bet at 9/2.

Jeremy Noseda’s colt was well beaten on his debut but then put in a really eye-catching effort when fourth at Newbury before opening his account in good style at Windsor last time out.

The son of Oasis Dream showed bags more pace that day and despite still showing distinct signs of inexperience and hanging left inside the final furlong quickened up smartly inside the last 100 yards to win going away by 2 lengths from Blue Tiger.

Although the form is nothing to write home about it was the manner of the victory which impressed me as it was clear that he was still very much in the learning process.

He is the type that will improve with racing, and although his initial mark of 78 looks a bit harsh on the face of things I would be surprised if he doesn’t end up far better than that.

The turn of foot he showed at Windsor will always stand him in good stead once the penny finally drops and he develops into the finished article, and he has by far the most potential of any of the runners in today’s field.

I thought he would be favourite for this, so at the 9/2 on offer he looks overpriced and has to be the bet.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 3pts win Nocturn (9/2 bet365, Hills – BOG)
