Joe Packet runs of his lowest mark for four years in the 6.00 at Newmarket this evening and makes plenty of appeal at 9/2 to take advantage and score an overdue success.
Jonathan Portman’s charge is on a long losing run, having not scored since landing a 6f contest at Windsor back in 2011 off a mark of 91.
However, he has run numerous solid races to finish in the frame in some decent handicap and having been rated as high as 104 is now running off just 83.
That gives him every chance at the weights, and he has been shaping well of late without troubling the judge.
The seven-year-old was far from disgraced three starts back when 8th of 16 to Asphan Sam in a class 2 contest at Epsom and also ran better than his final finishing position suggest last time out over course and distance when a 4 3/4 length fifth of 8 to Highland acclaim in a class 3 contest.
He now drops down into class 4 company, and with underfoot conditions holding no fears, this represents a great opportunity for Joe Packet to belatedly get back in the winners’ enclosure.
