Manny Pacquiao beat Juan Manuel Marquez by majority points decision in what as Daily Sport predicted yesterday would be a very closely fought contest over 12 rounds for the WBO Welterweight Title. Both guys fought a tough fight and in many peoples eyes Marquez did enough to get the decision but the judges saw it 115-113 116-112 and 114-114 I also thought that 38yo Marquez did enough to clinch it, but boxing’s boxing and everyone sees a fight differently never more often than in the judges scores.
After the fight Pacquiao’s trainer Freddy Roach said that Marquez deserves a re-match. But with a mega millions super fight on the cards against Floyd Mayweather this looks highly unlikely.
On the undercard the only man to beat Britain’s Amir Khan Colombia’s Breidis Prescott fought Mike Alvarado and was way ahead on points in an all action contest but bloody Alvarado pulled it our of the bag in the 10th and final round stopping Prescott with just 67 seconds to the bell.
Also in action was undefeated WBO Junior-Welterweight champ Timothy Bradley who dropped from 4 time world champ Joel Casamayor 3 times during the fight with his corner throwing in the towel in the 8th. 28yo Bradley now has 28 straight wins with 12 KO’s and from this performance he’ll take some beating.
Daily Sport says – A great night’s boxing albeit a tad controversial. We’ll just have to see now if Marques drops back down to Lightweight as him and new Interim WBO champ Ricky Burns would be some battle.
