Portugal the punt to send Holland home

Portugal have to be the punt at 15/8 with Ladbrokes and Paddy Power  to beat Holland tonight (7.45pm KO, Live on ITV1), and send them crashing out of Euro2012.

This is a game which Holland must win by at least two clear goals and hope that Denmark lose their game against Germany to qualify for the last 8 by the skin of their teeth.

However they haven’t impressed with their finishing so far in defeats to Denmark and Germany, and the stats suggest that they are really up against it.

They have only won one of their previous 10 internationals against Portugal, with that 1-0 victory coming in Rotterdam back in 1992 in a Euro qualification game.

That’s grim reading and makes them look worth taking on.

Admittedly Portugal haven’t exactly shone so far, but they did come to life and play some good attacking football after going 1-0 down to Germany in their opener before beating Denmark 3-2 last time up.

They also have two players in the shape of Ronaldo and Nani who can exploit the weak Dutch back-line, and I think they have been underestimated by the bookies.

This is the type of game in which Ronaldo could well shine, and at a general price of 6/1 to net the opener he makes plenty of appeal.

Another bet which looks real value is for Portugal to win to nil at 9/2 with BetVictor.

The Dutch have failed to score in six of their 10 meetings with Portugal, and that suggests that their offer is too big and worth a small wager.
