Royal Ascot: Waterclock worth a wager at 33/1

Waterclock has some solid form to his name and looks overpriced at 33/1 in the 5.00 at Royal Ascot.

The five-year-old doesn’t have many miles on the clock, having had only seven starts since scoring on debut at Newbury in October 2011.

He showed progressive form last year in staying contests when trained by Roger Charlton, finishing an excellent runner-up to Argent Knight at Newmarket and a cracking second of 33 to Scatter Dice in the Cesarewitch at headquarters off a mark of 88.

The son of Notnowcato finished in front of serveral of today’s rivals, including the well-fancied Lieutenant Miller and Domination.

Waterclock meets Lieutenant Miller on the same terms having finished 1/2 a length in front of him, yet can be backed at three timesthe odds of that rival this afternoon.

That makes him look good value in my eyes, and although well beaten in the Chester Cup on his first start for Jedd O’Keefe he was badly drawn that day and should have come on for the run.

Off just 2lb higher than when runner-up in the Cesarewitch and Graham Lee (who has a near 43% strike rate when teaming up with the stable) now in the in the saddle, he looks well worth an each-way wager at the odds on offer in a wide open contest.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts each-way Waterclock (33/1 bet365, Paddy Power – BOG)
