Slam has caught my eye on more than one occasion and makes plenty of each-way appeal 7/1 at in the 1.35 at Doncaster today.
Tom George’s gelding was a Useful sort on Flat for Barry Hills and although yet to deliver over hurdles he has shown enough to suggest he could be well treated from his current handicap mark of 90.
The six-year-old was heavily backed on his final start last season at at Wincanton, and stayed on well to finish a never nearer 4 1/4 length third to Nothing Is Forever without being knocked about.
That run suggested that connections would have little difficulty in placing him to score in handicap company, and with the assessor having since dropped him by 2lb this looks a glorious opportunity for his to get his head in front where it matters after a promising reappearance.
That run came out Kempton, and he was well backed into 11/4 second favoruite despite looking as if the run would bring him on.
He was very fresh and keen that day and could only keep on at the one pace to finish third to Mangonel, but he showed enough to me to suggest that he was more than capable of winning a race of this nature.
I think he’s better than his current mark indicates, and now that he has got a run under his belt he should be spot on to do himself justice on a track which should suit.
Everything looks in place for a huge run, and he looks the one they all have to beat.
