Scouser Callum Smith became KING of the super-middleweight division last night in Jeddah when he stopped fellow Brit George Groves in the 7th round of their World Boxing Super Series final.
The fight billed as #RowdyInSaudi by promoters saw Smith edging the fight going into the 7th when he dropped Groves to singal the end of the fight and him taking home the Ali Trophy plus WBA Super, Ring magazine and WBC Diamond straps.
“I have waited so long for this,” said Smith who has been dreaming of becoming world champion since childhood.
“I’m a big believer in my own ability and I knew I was good enough to become the best on the planet.”
“I’m not a man who shows a lot of emotion, you never see me ecstatic, but you saw it tonight because it’s a lifetime ambition fulfilled.’
Groves showed grace in his defeat and congratulated his English rival.
“Embarrassing,” said Groves.“I’ve never been hurt by a body shot before this in my entire career. But all credit to Callum. He deserves this night.”
Well what a cracking end to season 1 of WBSS and a well deserved win to Smith which can only see him going from strength to strength after last nights performance.
