Sovereign fancied to strike gold

Last Sovereign has a good record fresh and makes plenty of appeal at 12/1 in the opener at Wolverhampton today (2.25).

Ollie Pears gelding is not the easiest to catch right but is a useful tool on his day as he showed when taking advantage of his lenient handicap mark when making virtually all to beat Cornus by a cosy 2 1/4 lengths in a 6f handicap at Pontefract last August.

He failed to follow up that effort in three subsequent runs, blowing his chance with a slow start on each occasion and looking far from straightforward.

However his record when returning from a break is excellent, and given that he has been off the track for 114 days there is every chance that he has been freshened up and now is the time to catch him.

The eight year-old has won twice after being off the track for 92 and 177 days, and finished second three times after breaks of 131, 145, and 165 days.

That suggests that he would have every chance in this claimer if putting his best foot forward, and another plus is that his trainer has a 21.88% strike rate with his runners at the track.

If he can break on terms today then he has every chance of taking this, and at the odds on offer looks good each-way value.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts each-way Last Sovereign (12/1 Boylesports)
