St Nick suffers career-ending injury

St Nicholas Abbey, favourite for Saturday’s Betfair-backed King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot, has suffered a career-ending injury on the gallops this morning.

Coolmore Stud tweeted this morning: “St Nicholas Abbey suffered a serious career ending injury at Ballydoyle this morning, vets are currently attending to him.

“We hope to save him for a career at stud, a further update will be posted later.”

Trained by Aidan O’Brien, the six-year-old had won both his starts this year, landing the Dubai Sheema Classic on World Cup Night at Meydan and the Coronation Cup on Derby day.

He had won nine of his 21 starts – including 7 in Group 1 company – and amassed nearly £5 million in prize money.
