Success Days worth siding with at 20/1 in Investec Derby

I think a case can be made to take on those at the head of the market in today’s Investec Derby at Epsom (4.30) and in a wide open renewal Success Days looks decent each-way value at 20/1.

Trained in Ireland by Ken Condon, the colt has a progresive profile and comes into the contest having shown vastly improved form to win all of his three starts as a three-year-old.

The last two of those victories have come in Ireland’s two pre-eminent trials for this race – the Ballysax Stakes and Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial.

In the Ballysax, Success Days made all and kept on strongly to pull clear and win easing down close home by 4 1/2 lengths.

The win was rejected as a bit of a fluke as Success Days was sent off the 10/1 outsider of three in the Group 3 contest and red-hot favourite John F Kennedy – one time ante post favourite for today’s race – trailed in last 10 1/2 lengths behind the selection.

However, Success Days backed that run up with an impressive success in Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial at Leopardstown when making to slam Summaya by 10 lengths.

The runner-up is no slouch and beat Hans Holbein by 10 lengths on his final start as a two-year-old, and that one is fancied by many for this.

To me Success Days seems to have been overlooked and is clearly thriving and on an upaward curve.

The one concern is that his wins have come on soft ground, but his action suggests quicker going should not be a problem.

If that proves to be the case I can see him running a huge race.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts each-way Success Days (20/1 Stan James – BOG, 1/4 odds 1,2,3)
