Surprise and Spencer look super at 7s

Born To Surprise drops back into handicap company in the 4.45 at Doncaster and is strongly fancied to take advantage and land the spoils at 13/2.

Michael Bell’s charge was out of his depth when when a well beaten 13th of 14 to trumpet Major in a Group 3 at Goodwood last time out, but had shaped really well on his previous two outings.

The first of those came in the Britannia at Royal Ascot, where he kept on well to finish a never nearer 7th of 29 to Fast Of Free off today’s mark of 92.

He then looked all over the winner next time up at Yarmouth when making good headway from the rear to take up the running inside the final furlong, before hanging left and weakening on the soft ground to get collared in the dying strides and beaten a neck by Comrade Bond.

The conditions were totally against him that day, and there is little doubt that the return to a quicker surface will suit.

The son of Exceed And Excel looked a horse to keep on the right side when winning over course and distance back in April when slamming Star Date by 5 lengths in a race which has thrown up plenty of subsequent winners, and there is little doubt in my mind that he is capable of winning races of this nature of his current rating.

He has his optimum conditions today, and with Jamie Spencer in the saddle looks the one they all have to beat.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 3pts each-way Born To Surprise (7/1 Stan James)
