Darts legend Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor has called for top players to make it tougher for Michael van Gerwen in this weekend’s Unibet Champions League of Darts.
The Dutchman heads to Cardiff for the BBC-televised event having won an incredible 17 tournaments this year.
Taylor says van Gerwen is the best darts player ever – and that his domination of the sport has to end.
The 16 times world champion from Stoke said: “I’ve played with every great there’s ever been and he is the greatest.
“He’s dominating the game the way I did. He believes in himself and he’s aggressive.
“When he hits a good shot, he lets you know it. He’s a nasty player and we have to give it back to him. We have to turn the tables on him. We have to put him under pressure.
“At the moment, we are not performing against him.
“Maybe I’m too old (to stop van Gerwen), but if I can, I’m going to find a player to beat him.”
Van Gerwen starts his bid for the Champions League trophy against Robert Thornton on Saturday and Taylor meets another Scot, Peter ‘Snakebite’ Wright.
