The Pentagon a 25/1 each-way play in St Leger

The Pentagon has always struck me as a stayer so at 25/1 looks worth an each-way play in the St Leger at Doncaster today (3.35).

Aidan O’Brien’s colt had some very smart for as a juvenile when winning twice and finishing a a keeping on 2 3/4 lengths third to stable companion and subesquent 2000 Guineas winner Saxon Warrior in the Group 1 Racing Post Trophy at this venue in which Roaring Lion came second.

He looked the type that would come into his own as a three-year-old but has failed to get his head in front in five starts this season.

However, he did run well on the second of those when a length third to Hazapour in a Group 3 over 1m 2f at Leopardstown and also when fifth of 12 to Latrobe in the Irish Derby over 1m 4f at the Curragh where after being held-up and forced to race wide he got outpaced before staying on strongly to be gaining all the way to the line and beaten 3 3/4 lengths.

The Pentagon also did all his best work at the finish when fifth last time out in the Great Voltigeur at York where he was 3 3/4 lengths behind stable companion Kew Gardens, who came third and is second favourite for this, having been given plenty to do.

Given the huge price discrepency between the pair – and that The Pentagon appears to be crying out for a crack of the 1m 6f trip of this – he looks overpriced and a lobsided market dominated by Lah Ti Dar and Kew Gardens.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts each-way The Pentagon (25/1 bet365 – BOG, 1/4 odds; 25/1 BetVictor – Bog, 1/5 odds)
