Momkin shaped far better than the bare result suggests last time out, so now eased in grade looks worth siding with at 100/30 in the Listed 1m Sir Henry Cecil Stakes on the opening day of Newmarket’s July Festival (4.40).
This Roger Charlton trained colt won one of his three starts as a juvenile and ran a blinder on seasonal reappearance when runner-up in the Group 3 Craven Stakes over a mile at Newmarket.
Momkin found himself short of room at the vital stage inside the final furlong but, when finally getting some space, ran on strongly to go down by just a neck to Skardu.
The winner has on to finish a fine third in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, fourth in the Irish equivalent at The Curragh, and a close up 1 1/2 lengths fourth to Circus Maximus in the Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes.
That gives the form a strong look and Momkin himself was also far from disgraced when 10th to Magna Grecia in the 2000 Guineas when making headway to hold every chance a furlong from home, before weakening to be beaten 8 1/4 lengths.
He has since run veru well to finish 3 3/4 length sixth of 18 to Space Blues in the Gruup 3 Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot where he was unlucky not to hit the frame at least after getting hampered two form home when travelling well before again finding himself short of room at the furlong marker.
It was a fine effort given how the race panned out and the form reads well in relation to this given that Space Blues has since chased home Too Darn Hot in a Group 1 in France.
This is also less competitive than the Jersey, so it looks a nice opening for Momkin to bag a second career success.
