Two fancies for Fontwell

Trop Fort of major interest

Trop Fort takes a major drop in class in the opener at Fontwell (1.20) and looks the best bet on the card at

He disappointed when held up and never getting competitive in the valuable Grade 2 Persian War Novices Hurdle at Chepstow last time out, but this is a run of the mill class 4 event and far easier.

The five-year-old won both starts in French provincial bumpers for Emmanuel Clayeux and was considered a Triumph Hurdle horse when joining David Pipe.

He was sent of a well backed favourite to land a competitive maiden hurdle at Taunton on his debut in this country and was in the process of running a big race when coming to grief at the last.

Whether he would have beaten the eventually winner Brampour (who won a valuable handicap at Ascot on his reappearance) is questionable, but he was rallying well after leading for much of the race and it was a highly promising effort.

The gelding was then pitched into the deep end in the Triumph at the Cheltenham Festival but after a blunder at the first could never get competitive and trailed in 20th of 23 behind Zarkandar.

This is by far the least competitive race he has tackled since joining Pipe, and I am expecting more attacking tactics to be employed around today’s tight track which I think will suit him.

It will be a major disappointment if he does not take advantage of what looks a golden opportunity to  open his account in this country.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 4pts win Trop Fort (3/1 Boylesports – BOG, Sky Bet)

Velator fancied to make winning debut

Velator is a very interesting runner in the bumper that closes the card at Fontwell (4.20) and looks worth chancing at ? having reportedly been working well at home.

The Old Vic gelding is a half-brother to smart jumper Bellator, and his trainer Anthony Honeyball is a man to be feared in these races at the Sussex track.

He has a 66% strike rate since the start of last season (7-21), and is very adept at getting one to go in at the first time of asking.

I have been told that this one is well regarded at home and considered fit enough to do himself justice this afternoon, and would not be surprised to see him attract significant support in the early morning market.

Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts win Velator (9/2 bet365 – BOG, Sky Bet)
