USA favourites to regain Ryder Cup

Home advantage and passionate vocal support are two key reasons why the US team are odds-on at 8-11 on Betfair to reclaim the Ryder Cup at Medinah, Chicago, this weekend.

But the Europeans, renowned for a strong team spirit and featuring some of the best matchplay golfers in the world, will fancy their chances to cause an upset and are available at 15-8 to do just that. A tied contest currently trades at 12-1.

Despite a mixed record in previous encounters, a resurgent Tiger Woods is the 5-1 favourite to lead the US charge and be the top-scoring American, followed by Steve Stricker, Phil Mickleson and Dustin Johnson who are all 9-1 shots.

World number one Rory McIlroy is back to his very best form and is 11-2 to pick-up the most points for Europe. Matchplay experts Ian Poulter and Sergio Garcia, both available at 8-1, are also among the leading contenders.

Betfair’s Alex Bake said: “Home support and the set-up of the golf course are always vital at the Ryder Cup, but it’s a little surprising that the Americans are odds-on to win this time around.

“The European team has four of the top five ranked players, a better team ethic and, with so many regulars on the US Tour, will be far more comfortable with the course and the pressure cooker-like atmosphere than they have been during previous encounters in the States. The 7-4 on Europe looks a little big to me.”
